I can honestly say, after driving 2,359 miles through the dusty desert and monumental mountains with my grandma, that my face has incurred plenty of dust, sweat, blood, and tears. I devoted endless hours to spend with my grandma in order to see her wishes and dreams come true. I believe that at the end of the day, we more than succeeded in our journey and although my grandma and I were unable to do and see everything we had set out to do, I believe we spent more hours and miles in a car together than I bet most have spent with their grandma in their entire life.

We experienced both success and failure, and learned how to overcome the constant challenges and battles that we faced. I couldn’t be more proud of my grandma for her determination to make this road trip happen and for ultimately doing it. There may be some out there, but I don’t personally know any 85 (almost 86) year old woman who just lost her youngest son this past month who would even dare to attempt driving on a cross the country road trip. It’s people like my grandma that I’m so fortunate to have in my life who have taught me to not just dream my dreams, but to live out my dreams. There are so many people in this world who talk about their dreams and what they wish they could do in their life, and I have been beyond lucky to have role models in my life who don’t just talk the talk, but walk the talk. Which is why I have been able to accomplish everything that I have set out for myself in the past few years.

I have learned so much about the importance of desire, determination, and dedication in order to live out my dreams and the dreams of others. Although we experienced our fair share of struggle and doubt, never once did we give up. The only thing that held us back from carrying onwards, was the fact that logistically things weren’t going to work under my grandma’s health condition and the need for constant oxygen. In the end, her life is the most important and it would have been a death wish had me moved forward to South Dakota and so forth.

I couldn’t be more grateful for all of the love and support that I have received throughout the past week and thank those of you who have followed our adventure and have shared words of love and encouragement.

I’m not going to lie, this trip was extremely exhausting, overwhelming, stressful, and scary at times, but without the obstacles we faced it would not have been the phenomenal adventure that it was. We had so many incredible moments together that I am so lucky to have been able to experience with my grandma that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Although the struggles were tough, “TOUGH TIMES DON’T LAST FOREVER, BUT TOUGH PEOPLE DO!”

We made it back home alive and I’m so relieved that my grandma can now breathe and carry on.

DENVER: A BREATHTAKING Road Block… One Mile Too High

The State of Colorado has the highest average altitude in the United States and the City of Denver specifically is one of the highest elevated major cities in the United States as it sits exactly one mile above sea level.

With that said, Denver is no place for anyone with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, especially my grandma who has suffered from exacerbated COPD in the 72 hours strolling around Denver.

Unfortunately, the extreme altitude caused my grandma to end up facing the most major road block possible as she landed herself in the Emergency Room.

In my last blog post, I mentioned how I was relaxing laying pool side while my grandma napped in order to prepare to meet my cousin Trent and his girlfriend Bridgette for dinner in Downtown Denver.

Earlier Tuesday morning my grandma had inquired about us stopping by an Urgent Care to receive some much needed oxygen. When I tried to actually take her to Urgent Care, she changed her mind, refused, and said she would be fine. But as I was laying by the pool, my grandma came onto the balcony requesting to finally be taken to Urgent Care. Therefore, I took her by Urgent Care and as soon as she entered the office, they noticed she was unable to breathe and hooked her up to some oxygen. It was then revealed that her oxygen level was down to 75% which is way below the norm of 96% here in Denver.

Hours later, we took two oxygen tanks back to the house and we were told an oxygen company would come out to the house in the morning to set her up with oxygen so we could continue our trip.

Unfortunately, the two oxygen tanks were not enough, and by morning time my grandma needed to be taken to the Emergency Room at Littleton Hospital. We had waited around for a couple of hours for an oxygen company to come out to the house, but there were insurance complications and after being hassled around from company to company, we couldn’t wait any longer.

As soon as I took Gigi to the ER, they attended to her immediately, hooked her up to oxygen, ran some tests, and discovered she was back down, this time to 72%! The doctors and nurses in the ER were the best I have ever dealt with and took the greatest care of Gigi. There were some more complications though with insurance since we were from out of state, so it took 8.5 hours for them to straighten us out. By the time we left the ER, both Gigi and I were physically and mentally exhausted.

Finally, around 11 pm, an oxygen company came out to the house, set her up with a home oxygen machine and gave me 10 oxygen tanks that we could use in the car to get us back to California so that way she can properly be set up with oxygen at home.

Therefore, we had no choice but to turn around and head back home. I just drove 12 of the most grueling hours back to Las Vegas, where we are staying the night in the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino, before we finish out the road trip back to California tomorrow.

This crazy adventure has been one for the record books, and I can’t say I will ever have such an experience again. Say some prayers that we survive the rest of the way!

VEGAS TO DENVER: Me, Granny, & the Open Road…

ARE WE THERE YET!?!?

If I have to listen to ONE more Dean Martin song (which I will), then my grandmother’s 30 track Dean Martin CD that I have had to endure FIVE times in the past two days, is simply going out the window “accidentally”… Oops!image

Have you ever been in a car for 15+ hours with just you and your 85 year old grandmother… in one day? Well as of today, I have and it’s an extraordinary experience… to say the least!

I was awoken at 7 am this morning to my grandma all dressed up with her bag all packed and ready to go next to the hotel room door… after having driven her to Las Vegas the day before and spending the whole entire day and night gambling with her. I was exhausted (still am), but with more than 30 states to travel through over the next month, I knew I had to get up and going.

We took off from Vegas at around 9:00 am on Monday, August 3, 2015 and well, it’s now 1:44 am on Tuesday, August 4th. Allow me to take you through the journey I just experienced.

After filling the car up with gas, I jetted through Nevada in my grandma’s VW Jetta and dragged her to the Arizona sign upon entering the state line. She was huffing and puffing, literally out of breath after about 10 steps back to the car, and that’s when reality hit that we just might not survive.

Driving through Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado may have been the longest drive of my life, but it was absolutely magical. I truly believe everyone in this world needs to make this drive at some point in their lifetime. After having just traveled through Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Australia in the past year, I have never experienced such a picturesque and fascinating adventure like this one. It is absolutely incredible and unbelievable at what a mind blowing sight it is of the mountains, canyons, rivers, creeks, and desert.

Just about every few seconds my grandma would clear her throat and bark in my ear about my driving. I tried my best to ignore it and would just clear my throat right back at her! 😉 Driving through the desert on the wide open Interstate 15 highway is a struggle to drive below 80 mph, which is the speed limit most of the way. If I had driven the 75 mph that my grandma wanted me to drive in cruise control on, we would have never of made it to Denver.

Let me tell you, driving 15+ hours is not easy, and driving 15+ hours with your grandma is straight grueling. I do acknowledge the fact though that my grandma is able to endure that long of a drive and couldn’t be more grateful to be able to take her own the road trip of her dreams.

Driving through Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado in one day was truly breathtaking. The scenery is unreal, literally felt like we were driving through an extraordinary painting. I couldn’t help but snap a few quick photos as I whipped through it all.

The non-stop stories my grandma utters are entertaining nonetheless and the frequent remarks about other drivers on the road are almost unbelievable. I know we all know as people get older, they speak without filter, but my grandma is on a whole different level!

When we finally reached Denver after sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the I-70 highway through Colorado, I could not be more relieved only to find out that my cousin was playing in an indoor soccer game about 30 minutes outside of Denver in Parker, CO at the Parker Fieldhouse.

We pulled up to the Parker Fieldhouse just as my cousin Trent’s soccer game ended. Therefore, we drove to a local restaurant and sports bar where we finally ate some dinner at around 11:00 pm. Once we finished, Gigi and I had to drive another 30 minutes to Littleton, Colorado where her cousin’s son, the Wilkins, live in a chateau on top of a mountain overlooking the beauty of Littleton.

The Wilkins are out of town, but they generously gave us the code to their magnificent home so we could get a couple nights of solid rest. Little did I know, the canyon they live in is infested with deer, and with our luck, several deer popped up in front of the car as we were driving through the dark roads. Fortunately, I was able to avoid them all!

At last, we arrived and are very much enjoying their incredible home!

TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2015:

This morning I was awoken at the crack of dawn, 6:06 am to be exact, by Gigi pacing around the house. I refused to get up though as my body felt paralyzed from all of the driving the day/night before. So I slept another two hours before charging a full on day in Denver.

After getting up and ready to go, we drove 10 minutes down the road to Columbine High School where the 1999 shooting massacre took place. Although I was only about 11 years old, I remember that day distinctly watching the drama unfold on every news network on T.V. I have always wanted to visit the campus to pay my respects to all of the victims of that horrific day. Therefore, we drove around the school and I walked up to the Columbine Memorial which is located in the most beautiful park at the back of the school.

Columbine High School is one of the most beautiful schools I have ever seen in the most picturesque location. It is extremely hard to believe anyone in such a remarkable atmosphere could have the demons within them to kill 12 students and a teacher cold blooded. The memorial is absolutely astonishing and the most beautiful memorial that I have probably been too. I have also been to the Virginia Tech memorial which is pretty incredible as well. After spending about 30 minutes paying my respects, we drove to Downtown Denver and explored.

We visited Sports Authority Field home to the Denver Broncos football team, as well as The Pepsi Center home to the Denver Avalanche hockey team and Denver Nuggets basketball team, and walked around Coors Field home to the Colorado Rockies baseball team. All sports complexes are beyond mind blowing and a sight to see. I love how they are all within 10 minutes of each other, opposed to my home in LA where everything takes forever to get to.

I attempted to wheel chair my grandma through Denver’s top rated Botanic Gardens, but my grandma refused to be wheel chaired and also refused to go to Urgent Care to obtain some oxygen to help with her breathing. She spends most of the time huffing and puffing which puts me in a lot of distress, afraid she could stop breathing at any given time. She remained in the car, so we drove to the Century 16 movie theatre where the 2009 shooting massacre took place in Aurora. I wanted to visit the theatre to pay my respects to those victims lost as well and see where it all took place. I went into the theatre and walked around for about 15 minutes before going to get a late lunch to take back to the chateau.

I finally got some Chipotle to eat, as I have not indulged in a burrito bowl since living in Australia for 9 months. I enjoyed the bowl on the outside terrace of the chateau and am now resting up, before meeting up with my cousin Trent and his girlfriend Bridgette in Downtown Denver for our last meal in Colorado.

GRANNY ROAD TRIP USA TOUR 2015: VEGAS!

WE SURVIVED THE FIRST LEG OF THE “GRANNY ROAD TRIP USA TOUR 2015” and have had the best day in #VEGAS!

At 9:22 am on Sunday, the 2nd of August, my 85 and very much alive grandmother, Gigi, and I took off from La Quinta Cove, California and headed straight to SIN CITY!

It took us 4 hours to get here and would have possibly of been quicker had my grandma not glared at the speedometer the whole entire drive! 🙂 I begged her to take some sleeping pills in order to make the drive a bit more pleasant, but she told me she doesn’t take any pills… aside from the four sets of different medications she is already on! Therefore, she stayed awake the whole drive and would clear her throat about every 3-5 seconds as a way to tell me to slow down. So I would just clear my throat in return and continue on. 😉

Gigi insisted we listen to her music first thing in the morning as she put a CD in of her all time favorite, Dean Martin, the WHOLE ENTIRE WAY… I couldn’t really tell the difference between songs, so we ended up listening to the same soundtrack TWICE! Finally I realized it once I couldn’t stand listening to it any longer and was able to listen to a little bit of my own music once I was able to explain to her that the songs were repeating. At this point though we were about 5-10 minutes outside of Las Vegas.

When we reached Vegas, Gigi had to “piddle” aka use the toilet badly, so I pulled into the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. I parked the car on the third level of the parking structure and then we had to walk to an elevator to take us down to the Casino level so that way we could locate a toilet for her to use. We had maybe walked 20 feet at most until she needed to stop for a rest. She breathes heavily when walking and I immediately was concerned and mentioned that a wheelchair would be nice to have, but she refused.

We eventually made it to the toilet and then she wanted to hit the penny slot machines straight away. Within an hour or so she had won about $600 and I had lost about $40, so she gave me $100 to make me feel better. She loves to gamble and loves winning, and I must say, I’ve never seen her not come out on top.

Once she started to lose a little, I was finally able to drag her out onto the strip (literally) to get a bite (literally) to eat. She doesn’t eat much, so I’m trying my best to force her to eat more. I was able to get her to walk two blocks, since her favorite place to eat is Denny’s. She ordered a cup of soup and a side of broccoli. I tried to force her to eat some chicken quesadilla, but no luck. We enjoyed lunch and then she wanted to go back to the MGM for more slot machine action.

The only thing that kept us from staying too long in the casino was the fact she was intensely shaking from the cold. I finally convinced her for us to check in to the hotel so she could put warmer clothes on, even though it was 100 degrees outside!!! Walking to the car was yet another major task, so this time I picked her up from the elevator. When we made it to the hotel around 6 pm, we tested in the room for about two hours until she built up an appetite for dinner.

We ate at a restaurant in the hotel where she ordered Pot Roast. I was excited for her to finally eat some meat, hoping it adds a little to her skin in and bones. She ate about a quarter of it, and then it was time for a few more slots where at one point she was up about $55, but she walked away once she was up by just $2. She is good about stopping before going under, which is a blessing!

Once I got her to bed, I roamed up and down the strip for a couple of hours before heading to bed myself. My walk around Vegas got me excited for when my German brothers visit next summer as I plan to spend a solid weekend with them here. Vegas is truly an incredible place and the perfect place for our first leg of our adventures around the USA!

Now, we are preparing a 10.5 hour drive to DENEVR, COLORADO where we will get to visit with family, including one of my favorite cousins Trent!

GRANNY ROAD TRIP: USA TOUR 2015

HAPPY 1st of AUGUST WORLD! The morning we have all been waiting for has arrived! It has been TWO WEEKS since I moved back home from spending 9 months in Australia, so now I’m finally taking off on my next journey of a lifetime, which kicks off NOW!

This morning I’m embarking on the “GRANNY ROAD TRIP USA TOUR 2015” with my legendary grandmother, Gigi, in order to make her wishes of meeting the first baby of the 7th generation in our family of her lifetime, come true at last! The baby lives in Pennsylvania, but our first stop is: VEGAS! (Gigi loves the penny slots)

I’m heading out to La Quinta, California this morning and will then head out to Las Vegas, Nevada with Gigi on Sunday morning.

On the 5th of July, I received messages from both my mother and grandmother as soon as they were told that my Uncle had just been found dead in the desert near where my grandma lives by a coroner. It was heartbreaking to hear this news from them and that is when I knew I had to leave my life behind in Australia and come home to be with my family. Not to mention, Gigi has been discussing going on this road trip for about a year now, so I figured this would be the perfect time to take her on the trip and hopefully relieve some of her sadness and heartbreak.

My family is the utmost important part of my life and I could not be happier than to be able to drive my grandmother on a trip around the USA! We are starting the road trip this morning in Southern California and will be heading straight out to Las Vegas, Nevada where we will spend the day and night.

Gigi may be turning 86 in September, but age is just a number to her. Her lively spirit, upbeat energy, and passion for living larger than life, will make this road trip one for the record books!

SIX MONTHS IN SYDNEY

Has it really only been six months since I left home with just myself and a backpack?

I feel like I have lived another whole lifetime in the land down under! Living in Sydney has been an extraordinary experience. I have never been away from home this long without taking at least a visit back home, but this city has significantly helped make me feel like I’m in my second home.

Although I’ll never have the family and friends here that I do back home, Sydney is such a fascinating place to live with so many different people and cultures that I don’t feel alone.

imageSydney is not only the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia, but it is also the most populous city in the entire continent of the Oceania.

Although Melbourne is closing in on the gap, Sydney is expected to be the first city in Australia to reach 5 million people within this year!! Furthermore, Sydney is the most multicultural city in Australia and one of the most multicultural cities in the entire world.

In the 2011 census, Australia’s population was at an estimated 4.6 million people with about 1.5 million of that total born overseas and representing many different countries around the world.

With more than 250 languages spoken within the city, I have been exposed to so many different people who speak so many different languages, especially having worked here in the service industry where I work mainly with foreigners due to our visa restrictions. About one-third of Sydney residents speak another language than English in their homes and I find that to be absolutely incredible. Never did I ever imagine Sydney to be so multicultural with such a vast amount of people here from all over the world.

I spent my first month in Sydney living at my mate Craig’s house in a suburb to the west of the city, called Kings Park. Then, once I settled in, I got hired to work at Manly Wharf Bar in Manly Beach where I lived for two months in an apartment with two Australian girls, just steps from the beach and wharf in a peninsula type setting. The address was 6/6 West Promenade Street, Manly, NSW 2021.

In my first month at Craig’s house, it was the perfect way to be introduced to life in Australia and I could not be more thankful for Craig and his fiance Carly’s top notch hospitality.  They spoiled me with a very comfortable bedroom, the most delicious home cooked meals, and helped immensely in my mission to get around town and explore Sydney.  I honestly, could not be luckier than to have had them there for me and make my first experiences in Australia so incredible.  I didn’t want to over stay my welcome and needed to move closer in the job I got in Manly Beach, so about a month after living with Craig and Carly, I moved to Manly Beach, thanks to Craig’s help in transporting all of my luggage.

The following is a status update from when I moved out of Craig’s house:

“For the past month now, (as I’m sure most of you already know due to me going travel post happy… again) I’ve been living in Australia and have had the greatest fortune to have the most awesome & most generous friends Craig Gordon and Carly de Pyper, welcome me into their home and make me feel right at home until I was able to get up on my own two feet! There have been times of struggle & doubt, trial & error… but one of the many valuable lessons that I have learned throughout my life, is to never ever give up and do whatever it takes to be persistent, persevere, wake up everyday telling yourself you can do whatever you set your mind to, and then to go after it with every ounce of your heart.

Unfortunately, life is short and you truly never know when it can be taken from you, your loved ones, or anyone for that matter. With that said, I’ve come to realize that you really need to make the most of life while you have it and just follow your heart’s desires.

I have now started working in the most beautiful place, which has forced me to move & continue making changes, but I have fortunately found a place to live steps from the Manly Cove & Manly Beach… (Sort of like a big peninsula)

I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities that have come before me & am beyond fortunate to have found myself taking yet another leap of faith by pursuing my dreams of traveling the world while experiencing the best that life has to offer.

With that said, if you go to bed at night not completely satisfied with what you are doing, make a positive change. Just do it. Sacrifices will have to be made, but in turn, there is no greater feeling than going to bed with the feeling that you are living your dreams. Cheers!”

In the next couple of months, through the core of summer, I lived in one of the best locations anyone in Sydney could live in.  I live on third/top floor of the apartment complex and had my very own private rooftop with a BBQ, tables and chairs, lounge chairs, a washer and dryer, and the best view of the beach and the wharf.  I was literally living the dream and absolutely loved it there.  I quickly made a few good friends in the neighborhood and my good friend from home, Sarah, lived very close by, as well as my former high school football teammate, Jordan, who lived just the next street over from my apartment.  It was a perfect set up, but almost too perfect.  It started to feel a bit too much like home.  That is when, I decided to move on.

I quit my job at the Manly Wharf Bar after 2 months and moved to the Sydney suburb named Paddington, which is a really nice neighborhood between Bondi Beach and the CBD (Central Business District). My house was 3.5 stories with 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a living/dining room, laundry terrace, spacious kitchen, and big backyard with a BBQ! In total, I lived with four different Australian guys, 1 Australian girl, 1 British guy, 1 British girl, and 1 American girl. It was quite the lively house at times and I will have both good and bad memories of 49 Elizabeth Street, Paddington, NSW.

Once I moved to “Paddo”, I got hired to work for Fresh Catering as a service waiter and logistics runner. Working for “Fresh” was an incredible experience as the job exposed me to all over Sydney as I got to work some awesome events in amazing venues throughout the city and beyond. The job I worked the most was as a logistics runner for the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour event that gave me 6 days a week of work, for 6 weeks. I got to work near “Mrs. Macquaries Chair” in the Royal Bontanic Gardens on the water and overlooked the Opera House everyday. I worked on a team with a Brit, Australian, German, and Swede! It was an extraordinary experience working on a team where everyone was from a different country!  Although we had our cultural differences, we all worked really well together and had an incredible experience.

There is a significant concentration of foreign banks and multinational corporations in Sydney and the city is promoted as Asia Pacific’s leading financial hub. In addition to hosting events such as the 2000 Summer Olympics, millions of tourists come to Sydney each year to see the city’s landmarks. Its natural features include Sydney Harbour, the Royal National Park, Bondi Beach, and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Man-made attractions such as the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge are also well known to international visitors.

imageLiving in such a historical city and meeting so many people on a daily basis, Sydney is easily one of the top 5 cities I have ever been to and I will always have a special place for Sydney in my heart.  I could have spent my entire time in Australia living in Sydney, but that would have been too easy and not nearly as adventurous.  Therefore, on May 7, 2015, I took off for the Whitsunday Islands in the northeast region of Queensland, Australia, where I spent the next couple of months exploring the rest of what Australia has to offer.
